During the meeting V.Patskan informed Mr. Ambassador on the main issues that are under jurisdiction of the Committee, including observance of the rights and freedoms of man and citizen; ethno-national policy, international relations and rights of indigenous population and national minorities in Ukraine; citizenship and the status of foreigners and stateless persons; immigration, refugees and asylum in Ukraine, etc.

 

The Committee Chair noted that the Committee cooperates with numerous international institutions such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Migration Organization, the UN Commission on Human Rights, the Council of Europe, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

 

I.Stevile informed participants of the meeting that around 400 thousand Moldavians live in Ukraine. According to him, this is the biggest Moldavian Diaspora inhabiting mainly Bukovyna, Odesa and Mykolaiv region.

 

I.Stevile said that Ukrainian population of Moldova is the third largest linguistic community, since almost 180 thousand of people are the native speakers of Ukrainian. Mr. Ambassador stressed also that Ukrainian population is represented almost in every sphere of national economy, including trade, industry, health care, agriculture, science and culture.

 

The Parties discussed the possibility of activating cooperation at the level of parliamentary committees, which, according to them, will promote settlement of topical issues of Ukrainian-Moldavian cooperation.
